Full Guide: How to start a profitable one-person business (in 2026)

> "It is possible now to start a one-person company that would be worth more than $1 billion." > > - Sam Altman @sama
Look around you.
Normal, everyday people, who are no smarter than you, not more talented than you, not wealthier than you, are starting businesses and making a killing from (and they didn’t have any experience in running a business).
3 years ago I saw a guy making $100k/month on X as a one-person business.
He was a normal dude, working 4 hours a day, writing self-improvement posts.
What blew my mind even more is that he wasn't a special case.
There were many others on X also making $30k, $40k, and $50k as a one-person business.
"If everyone is making this money, then it must be easy", that's what I told myself 3 years ago.
So I started my one-person business while being a full-time graduate student.
What I didn't know was that I had no skills, no experience, nothing to brag about.
So understandably, I made only $350 in my first 3 months.
I bought courses, learned new skills, and built a decent sized-audience. Then at the end of my second year, I scaled my brand to $4,000/month.
Last year, I made over $50,000 at ~93% profit margins.
And this year, I'm already expecting to make multiple 6-figures.
The best part about it all?
I get to make a living doing something I love. I don't run my one-person business because I have to. I do it because I love it.
I wake up every day excited.
Just last week, I was able to go on a trip to Spain. While on this trip, I made $1,000 (without doing any work).
So here's what I want to share with you today (and honestly, this is the framework that changed everything for me).
First, I'm going to expose why "passive income" is actually keeping you stuck (and why the people selling it don't understand how humans actually work).
Then, I'll show you the one skill that makes you irreplaceable in an AI world—the skill that determines whether you thrive or get left behind.
But before any of that works, we need to talk about your mind.
Because if you're not continuously solving problems, you're degrading.
Everything (and I mean everything), begins and ends with how you direct your consciousness, and if you can't get it working for you, it'll work against you.
And finally, I'll walk you through the exact framework I use to build a profitable one-person business from scratch. The kind where you get paid for solving your own problems and improving your own life.
Your mind needs problems to function
— "Flow State is the state of consciousness where meaning, enjoyment, and fulfillment are found."
Problems are infinite.
Once you solve a problem, a new one shows up.
It doesn't matter how advanced we become as a species, even if we automate all of our work and you have no work to do, your mind will still create problems so that you work.
Our needs will transcend from the physical plane (food, water, and reproduction) to the metaphysical (meaning, love, fulfillment, creativity, enlightenment).
This doesn’t mean that solving them is pointless.
If anything, it's a good thing.
A good, meaningful, and happy life is lived when one is constantly solving their problems and contributing to society.
When you don’t solve problems, you stay the same.
There's a concept called entropy.
It is a law that governs the Universe.
It says all processes and systems naturally descend into chaos and disorder, unless external energy is put in system to maintain order.
It is the reason why the world we live in will eventually come to an end.
But there's also mental entropy.
When you don't identify problems, set meaningful goals, and improve your life, you are falling into chaos.
Your life becomes boring and meaningless.
Problems give you meaning, a sense of purpose, a way to learn new skills, acquire new knowledge, expand your perspective, and live a good life.
When you solve a problem in your life, you reach a new level.
Problems get more interesting, challenging, and harder.
But you are also a new person.
You have new skills, knowledge, and experience that you can pull from, which makes solving problems fun, exciting, and easy.
It’s similar to a video game.
Completing a level 1 dungeon when you are level 100 is boring (because there’s no challenge. You’re just one-shooting everything) . The opposite is also true. Completing a level 100 dungeon as a level 1 is impossible (it creates anxiety, rage, and frustration).
You need to play at your level, acquire gold, buy new gear, and gain experience so you can level up and take on harder and more interesting dungeons.
The loot is better, the reward is better, the achievement is better.
This is all to say that you need to create your own system (because that's how you guarantee that it has your best interest at heart).
You create your system by chasing your curiosity, identifying a problem, setting a goal, diving into the unknown, finding a solution, creating products and distributing the value you gained in exchange for money.
Learn to hunt. Learn to solve. Learn to build. Learn to earn.
Chasing passive income is keeping you miserable
The idea of passive income sounds like a dream.
You sit all day, play video games and money keeps coming in.
But this is the worst thing you can do.
Because you're human. And humans are problem-solving machines. You're not designed to sit around all day and do nothing.
Your ancestors were problem solvers.
You are coded by nature to be a problem solver.
If you make passive income and live comfortably, you'll quickly get bored and start to think of interesting problems to solve. That's just your mind works.
Your mind is a problem-solving machine.
You always need to have a meaningful problem or goal to chase.
This is the secret to creating work you love, making a living by solving your problems, and living a meaningful and enjoyable life.
Your current problem is that you hate the work you're currently doing. So you're trying to make money from other ways so you don't have to rely on your employer.
The solution is to create work that you find meaningful, enjoyable, and profitable so you don't have to dread the idea of work.
You find work you enjoy by solving the problems that exist in your life.
The one skill that AI can't replicate (and why it matters now)
The current educational system we have doesn't serve us anymore.
It’s too slow at teaching, dogmatic, and most of the skills you're learning will be replaced by AI in a few years.
If that's the case, why did we adopt this model?
And more importantly, why don't we change it?
The current education system we have was by the Prussians to create obedient and disciplined factory workers. Some people from the U.S. went there, saw it, and liked the idea, then they created standardised tests, grading systems, and different school years dictated by age.
You spend 22 years in Tutorial Mode, thinking you’re gaining skills and knowledge, but when you get thrown into the real world, you realize that most of it is useless.
Here’s a thought-provoking line for you:
The education system doesn’t have your best interest at heart.
I don’t say this to be controversial or to get a reaction from you. I say this because a system is designed to serve its master.
Since you are not the one who has created, funded, or keeps the system running, then it doesn’t serve you. The system serves those who are at the top, the ones who have the power. Schools and universities are designed to create workers for businesses and governments to keep running.
And businesses and governments don't want to change it because they want to take advantage of you.
Just look around you. AI and LLM are taking over the entry-level positions. The skills you learn at university, an AI can do it faster and better than you ever could.
Now, anyone who knows how to write (or even speak) coherently and clearly can write a complex piece of code, design an app, and create a website.
Back in the day, this would have taken a full team of employees made up of a product manager, a software engineer, a UX/UI engineer, a web developer, a web designer, and more.
But all of that is now gone. One person can now produce the same, if not more, than what took a team of 10 a decade ago.
This means fewer job openings, less hiring, more competition, and more layoffs.
For the average person, this is a nightmare.
Why?
Because the average person has low-agency individual.
This is how the average person lives their life (and how I predict their life will look like in the future if they don't change):
- They get assigned work, they get told what to do, and they don’t create their own goals.
- They can’t identify problems, they can't set goals for themselves, find solutions, and create a product that serves them and others at scale.
- They always need a master. Someone who tells them what to do. They are nothing but a tool to someone who has more agency than them.
- As AI gets more advanced and skilled, more people will be replaced by them. Unemployment will rise. Governments will start writing universal checks.
Unemployed individuals will live off of the government's welfare system and the universal checks that it will write. And they'll get to decide how you live your life (because you didn't create the system that's keeping you alive).
That is the path of the low-agency individual.
Low-agency individuals are the same as AI in the context that they both need a master.
Someone who tells them what to do, assigns goals and projects for them.
High-agency people are the complete opposite.
They see the Internet, AI, and LLMs as an opportunity. You have both the minds of Eisntienand Da Vinci in your pocket. With a quick search, you can find any piece of information you need to solve a problem you have.
The Internet and AI are tools for you to gain knowledge, explore the unknown, pursue your life’s work, and make a creative living (in the long run, you'll make more money than you know what you can do with).
The future belongs to those who create their own systems.
High-agency people identify their own problems, set a self-driven goal, dive into the unknown, search for a solution, error-correct through trial and error (which is a mark for intelligent systems) until they solve the problems, package their solution and contribute back to society.
Then repeat the entire process again when a new problem shows up.

This is getting a bit long, so it feels like a good place to have a call-to-action...
On March 2nd, I'm running a 6-week live cohort where I'll show you how to start, grow, and scale your one-person business (even if you're a beginner).
It's currently on a 50% early-bird sale.
There's more information about it at the end of this letter.

The 4 pillars of a profitable one-person business

> "You can go on the internet, and you can find your audience. And you can build a business, and create a product, and build wealth, and make people happy just uniquely expressing yourself through the internet." > > - @naval
It is obvious that the only way to create the life you so desperately want is to become an entrepreneur.
To become a problem-solving machine.
If you aren’t conscious of your own actions and actively pursuing self-generated goals, then you’re working towards someone else’s goals (which don’t have your best interest at heart).
> "If you can spend 8 hours building on someone else's dreams, you can spend 1 hour building your own." > > - @thedankoe
The best way to continuously improve your life is to identify problems in your life, solve them, and share your solution with the world.
You need to learn how to hunt.
You need to learn how to solve.
You need to learn how to earn.
You need to become an independent, self-sustaining, and high-agency person who takes
Again, the best way to do this is to start a business.
Not just any business, you need a one-person business.
Why?
- It is the only business model that takes a holistic approach to life.
- Your business evolves as you grow as a human (which forces you keep solving problems).
- It doesn't require any startup capital, employees, or fancy office (all you need is an internet connection).
- You get paid to solve your own problems, set your own working hours, and decide how much you earn (yes, you are always in control of how much you're earning).
- It is impossible to become saturated (because every person is unique and when done right with the steps I'll give you in the next section, a niche can never be too saturated).
- With AI and no-code tools, you can create a website, design thumbnails, create products, content, film, and edit videos without having any employees (and you don't need to know how to write a single line of code or use an editing software or even know anything about design). You can choose a template and start editing it.
In the past, individuals had to rely on established institutions to promote their work for them.
Authors relied on the publisher.
Musicians relied on a music label.
Startups relied on venture capital.
But the internet changed the game. It brought the power back to the individual.
You can create content on social media, talk about a specific problem to attract people who struggle with the same problem, sell your solution to them directly without relying on anyone.
When you have traffic:
- You can publish a book without having a publisher.
- You can create music without having a music label.
- You can launch a software company without having outside investment.
The new way of doing business is starting a one-person business.
Here's how to start one (as a complete beginner):
1) Branding
Branding is who you are, what you do, and who you do it for.
This can all be summarised by creating a vision and anti-vision for your life.
For You:
- Vision: What is the ideal lifestyle you're trying to live? If you had all the money in the world, what would you be doing, how long would you be working, what would you be working on? How do you speak, walk, feel, and think? Be specific.
- Anti-vision: What is the kind of life you don't want to live? What is the bane of your existence? How much are you earning? How do you look and feel? If you keep going down the path you're currently on, how would your life look? Are you happy with how it looks?
Your Brand:
- Vision: What is the ideal lifestyle you're trying to help people achieve? How would they achieve it?
- Anti-vision: How would
A vision becomes a goal for others to follow and it gives them a clear path on how good life can get.
The anti-vision creates a public enemy. Something that people can rally behind. You need this because humans are a tribal species. It gives them the "Us vs Them" feeling.
This is all important because that’s what makes a brand magnetic.
Your content, posts, newsletters, editing, and colour grading don’t matter if the essence of your brand isn’t magnetic.
You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’ll still be a pig, as the saying goes.
Your brand changes as your goals change and depending on where you are on your journey. This is important because people follow leaders. Strangers on the internet need to see you as a leader. You can talk about
People follow leaders.
Leaders usually follow other leaders.
2) Content
Content is how you attract like-minded people to your brand.
It is the new method of gaining attention (because attention is what everyone is now fighting for).
If you don’t have attention, you don’t have people who look at your content. If people aren’t seeing your content, they aren’t seeing your product. If they aren’t seeing your products, they aren’t buying them. If people aren’t buying your products, then you’re just a starving artist.
The best place to create content is on social media. More than 5.52 billion people are on social media. It’s where all the attention is.
“But Hussain, I don’t know what content to create?”
This statement has two components to it, the first is not knowing the format to which you can create your content (video, audio, or written), the second is not having content ideas.
To answer the first question, going a writing-based content path is better, easier, and has a lower-barrier to entry for most people. You don’t need any fancy mics, cameras, or expensive lighting to start. Everyone is a writer. You write daily. You text your friends, you journal, you outline, or write notes so you’re already a writer and you didn’t have an English degree to do all of that, so why would you think you need one now? Even if your interest is more technical, something like coding, writing has nothing to do with writing, writing helps you with your interests. It will help you outline, think, and plan for the future.
Writing is a meta skill.
It is the foundation of every other high-income skill you can think of it.
- Ads = writing
- Tweets = writing
- Newsletters = writing
- Video = Written script
- AI prompting = writing
- Podcasts = better done with a written outline
To answer the second part, your entire life is filled with content ideas.
The girl who rejected you. The exam you failed. The race you won. Every part of your life can be turned into content if you're aware of your thoughts, actions, and behavior.
The best content is one that talks about a pain point your Customer Avatar has.
Here's a process I like to use:
- Where is my reader at? What problem are they struggling most with?
- Where do they want to go? What is the solution to their problem?
- What path can they take to reach their goal? How can they apply the solution?
If you're paying attention, what I just described is a story.
That's all what content is, storytelling. You're telling the story of your Customer Avatar on where they are now and where they can be.
Writing one tweet won't change someone's life.
But if you write 30,000 tweets and use this storytelling structure every time, you have a very good chance of building a large audience and monetizing it.
3) Product
You need to create a product ASAP.
You don't need to wait 2 years before you start monetizing. Frankly, it's stupid if you wait "until you have more proof" before you start monetizing.
Why?
- You won't create a $1M product from your first try. But you can definitely iterate on it and get paid from the start.
- To someone who is two steps behind you, they already see you as the expert. And to make it even better, you already know what they're struggling with, so you are the perfect person to be helping them.
- Having a product will help you create better content. Because now, you'll have an idea on what you can talk about, this will help you nail your messaging in your content (which will lead to faster growth).
A product is nothing other than a systematic solution to a problem.
If you don't know what product to create, sell a personal system.
- A filmmaker who uses certain lighting presets can sell them as templates.
- A content creator might have a method that helps him beat creative blocks and so they can sell their method to their audience.
- A bodybuilder might have a specific way of approaching training, nutrition, and recovery to fit their own needs and goals, so they can sell their approach to their audience (who also have the same goals as him).
Your personal system can directly help your Customer Avatar (in this case it's you from 2 years ago) to solve a problem they are struggling with.
If you want to take this a step further, you can add information, worksheets, checklists, and film yourself, increase the value of your product, and charge more.
You can sell the tool and the guide (so people can make the best use out of it).
Smart people sell their sawdust.
4) Marketing
Marketing is persuasion.
- It is how you get people interested in your interests.
- It is how you distribute the value you created to society.
- It is how you get people to take the first step into improving their lives.
Marketing is not evil.
That's the social programming holding you back.
If improving someone’s life for the better is your definition of evil, then you need to take a hard look at yourself and ask, “Where did this self-limiting belief come from?”
Marketing is communicating the benefits of whatever you do.
Marketing is how you get strangers to care.
Marketing is how you get supporters for your work.
Marketing is how you attract higher-quality opportunities in your life.
You used marketing in your life before.
When you told your friends about a book you read, or a movie you saw, or a restaurant you went to.
That's marketing.
It didn’t feel evil because you were genuine. It should feel the same with marketing your brand, content, and products.
The difference between persuasion and manipulation is your intention.
Persuasion is creating a win-win situation. They receive value, you receive money.
Manipulation is creating a win-lose situation. You get money, they get scammed.
You need to understand that people don't care about your product. They care about how your product can change their lives.
In other words, what is the transformation of your product, content, or brand?
Pull out a notebook and reflect on these questions:
- How has your product impacted your life?
- If you’re selling a skill, why did you learn it?
- How does your life look after you’ve learned it?
- How did your life look before you learned it?
Make a list of all the benefits you gained (and others will potentially gain) from whatever you’re talking about.
This is your entire marketing plan.
All you need to do afterwards is talk about the problem, then lead people to heaven (the ideal lifestyle).
Use your personal philosophy—the main driver behind why you’re doing something—as your marketing and messaging as to why other people should do it and listen to you.
Thank you for reading.
Enjoy the rest of your day.
