How to get backlinks for free.

Ok, this is impressive.

You see, the entire internet runs now on citing other people's work.

Every blog post, every journalist, every SaaS landing page, and now every AI answer needs a number to back up its claim.

• “The market is worth $$$.”
• “Y% of teams already do this.”

And how do you make yourself be the claim? Be the first credible source that has the number:

• structured data
• ready to cite
• dated

The businesses that do this, those get the link.

And by being the source you also get cited inside ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. You become becomes the default answer for an entire topic.

The smart money is building the thing everyone has to cite.

I call it the Citation Hub tactic.

The mechanism, step by step

1. Pick the head term people are forced to cite.

We don't use “best accounting software”, but “Accounting statistics 2026”.

The query a writer types at 11pm when they need a stat for the post they’re publishing tomorrow: this has a high citation intent with permanent demand.

Then keyword-research every section and sub-section until you've covered the topic wall to wall. You never know what people will look for.

2. Aggregate 50+ statistics (from primary sources only.)

This is the part everyone gets wrong: they copy numbers off other roundups.

But you have to trace every single stat back to the entity that actually produced it: the government body, the earnings filing, the original research study.

Sometimes this means hopping over the paywalls as well. Then we verify every URL loads and the number is really on that page.

Why it matters: journalists trace citations to the root before they link to you, but if you do things well, you'll end up on top.

3. Structure the page to be cited, not just read.

• A Key Takeaways block up top: 10-14 one-line, quotable stats.
• Question-style headings that match the exact sub-questions AI breaks a query into, each answered in the first sentence underneath.
• Every stat attributed to its publisher, with a date and a link. Each number appears once and no fluff between the facts.

4. Stamp it fresh and keep it alive.

Freshness is a ranking and a citation signal: a dead stats page from 2026 gets taken over a 2023 one.

That’s it.

No PBNs, nor link farms, and specially: no begging.

You build the most citable asset in the niche, and the links and AI mentions come to you.

The proof

The data from five pages we built, May to August:

• 80+ backlinks earned across the pages.
• 10 links from DR 60+ sites — the kind you’d normally pay hundreds each for.
• One page pulled 20 links on its own — a single asset doing the work of a full link campaign.
• ~40% of the anchors were the statistic itself — people literally quoting our numbers (“$10.87B market,” “56% wage premium,” “95% accuracy”). Every verified stat is a hook someone will eventually cite.
• And the links kept compounding: 23 new ones landed in a single month once the page had traction.
