If you check on similarweb,

You can see that hike footwear is getting about 1.5m in monthly visits

Imagine you did this strategy with 5 of your biggest competitors

Bidded on their brand names and came in with a better offer

If you have a really good offer, you can do really well with this strategy

Buy 2 get 1 free is an ok offer, but there’s definitely better ones you can test that are more enticing

Remember, people are literally searching up your competitors name - so you’ll need a good offer to get them to go to your site instead

Split test offers at the start and then go with the one that performs the best

In this case, Hike footwear could put in a trademark complaint to Google

They could say that Alpine footwear are using their name in their ads and get it taken down

But you’d be surprised by how many lazy brand owners don’t trademark their name

And even if they do and get your ad taken down, you can just keep running the exact same campaign but with their brand name taken out of your ad

First Movers advantage

If you can do this to a popular brand that isn’t using Google ads, you’re golden

In this case, Hike footwear aren’t running Google ads

Which means even if they started today, Alpine footwear would likely rank top of the ‘hike footwear’ term for another while

Eventually Hike footwear would take it over as it’s more relevant (it’s in their website and domain name) - but you can still get a good few weeks or months appearing #1 for when people search your competitors name

Now imagine doing this with a 5 of your competitors

Ranking #1 for when you search their names, millions of eyeballs a month on your brand with a great offer
