most cold outreach frameworks are rated by the people who sell courses about them.

this ranking is based on what happens when you run each framework at volume across 20+ active B2B pipelines and measure the reply rates against a control.

the ranking (worst to best)

#8: the "i help" opener - 0.4-0.8% reply rate. the phrase "i help" triggers the reactance response immediately. never use this.

#7: the generic compliment opener - 0.6-1.2%. the compliment is a transparent segue to a pitch. every prospect knows the sender didn't actually read their content.

#6: the calendar-link pitch - 1.0-1.8%. the calendar link in the first email is a six-step process disguised as a simple ask. also a deliverability hazard.

#5: the competitor namejack - 2.0-3.5%. works when the competitor data is accurate and the prospect has a genuine pain with the named competitor. fails when data is wrong.

#4: the brutal honesty follow-up - 3.0-5.0% (as a follow-up, not an opener). "honest question: is this not relevant, or is the timing off?" the tonal shift from polished to genuine direct triggers a pattern disruption.

#3: the pain callout - 4.5-6.5%. names the specific pain without naming the solution. the prospect reads their own situation described back to them. empathy before evaluation.

#2: the case study fragment - 5.5-8.0%. one incomplete case study. "went from [X] to [Y] in [timeframe]. the one thing they changed wasn't the [obvious assumption]." the open loop creates pull toward closure.

#1: the front-end offer (bait-and-switch) - 7.0-14.0%. offers something small, specific, and genuinely valuable before any pitch. the reactance response never fires because there is no pitch to react against.

the meta-ranking: where fable 5 vs sonnet 5 makes a difference

fable 5 outperforms sonnet 5 on frameworks #1, #3, and #5 because these require contextual reasoning about the prospect's situation. sonnet 5 matches fable on #2, #4, #6, #7, and #8 because these are structurally simpler.

how to stack the ranking into an actual campaign

  • primary (40%): front-end offer
  • secondary (25%): case study fragment
  • tertiary (20%): pain callout
  • rotation 1 (15% split): brutal honesty follow-ups at touchpoints 3-4
  • rotation 2: competitor namejack where data supports it
  • bottom three (#6, #7, #8) stay permanently retired
