iOS Apps: The Lazymaxxers Guide to $10K MRR

I wrote a guide a couple weeks ago about how I took an app from $0 to $10K MRR in 30 days. Since consulting over 15+ app founders, I've noticed there were a few things missing.
Here's what's new:
- A full walkthrough of how I actually make my ads (with examples of my own winners)
- Updated pricing that prints more $$$
- The exact retention offer setup that Apple approves every time
- What will get you banned on the App Store and how to avoid it
This is the updated playbook. Everything I'd tell a friend if they asked me today how to build a profitable iOS app with the least amount of effort possible.
No UGC. No influencers. No organic. Just ads, a paywall, and a nap.
Here's the full breakdown:
STEP 1: STUDY WHAT'S ALREADY WORKING
There are tonnes of successful apps out there made by founders who've spent years failing time after time.
You can skip all that. Study what's working, understand WHY it works, then build your own version that improves on it.
Here are some apps printing money right now that you should be studying:
- Cal AI (food scanning, $3M+/mo)
- UMax (face rating/looksmaxxing)
- Pray Screen (faith/prayer lock)
Every single one of these sells to a core human desire. Every single one has a viral feature built in. Download them all. Screenshot their onboarding. Study how their ads look on TikTok.
The key word here is STUDY. Not steal. Not clone. You're looking for patterns. What emotion does the app target? What's the "aha moment"? How does the paywall sit in the flow? Then you build something that does it BETTER.
If you directly copy someone's app, two things happen:
- Apple rejects you.
- And even if they don't, the original founder reports you and you get pulled.
I've seen it happen dozens of times. Not worth it.
Take the blueprint. Improve the execution. Add your own angle. That's how every successful app founder on this platform started. They just won't admit it.
Creativity is the enemy of your first $10k. But so is a copyright strike. Find the middle ground.

STEP 2: SELL TO A CORE HUMAN DESIRE
Every billion dollar industry is built on the same thing. Exploiting a core human desire:
- Beauty brands sell the fear of being ugly
- Insurance sells the fear of losing everything
- Dating apps sell the hope of not being alone
- Fitness brands sell the dream body you don't have yet
This is marketing 101. The only difference is now you can build an app in a weekend that does the exact same thing.
Your app MUST target a deep emotional trigger. Not a "nice to have" feature. A genuine insecurity or desire that keeps people up at night.
The deeper the insecurity the better. "Am I attractive?" will always convert better than "Am I productive?" Nobody is emotionally invested in their to-do list.
If your app doesn't trigger an insecurity, no amount of ad spend will save it.
The best app niches all tap into the same desires: attractiveness, health, wealth, sex, status, intelligence, identity, fear. These have been selling products for centuries. They'll sell your app too.
— "9 Core Human Desires"
YOUR APP MUST HAVE A VIRAL FEATURE
This is the CHEAT CODE. If you can screen record someone using your app, or show the "aha moment" in a single visual, you have a winner. Face ratings, height predictors, food scanners all have a "reveal" moment.
VIRAL FEATURE + CORE HUMAN DESIRE = $$$
STEP 3: ONBOARDING & PAYWALL
This is one of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of your funnel. And the best part? It's super fking easy.**
Study the onboarding flow and paywall structure from the top apps in your niche. You'll notice they all follow the same pattern. That's not a coincidence.
HARD paywall at the end. No trial. No freemium. Users must PAY to get their desire satisfied.
— "My Paywalls"
Pricing:
> $12.99/week + $59.99/year.
These are the numbers that work right now. Higher than you'd think. But the people clicking your ad are emotionally invested. They WANT the answer. They'll pay for it.
Retention Offer
This is free money most people leave on the table. When a user tries to cancel their subscription, present a "retention offer". Set yours at $44.99/year.
— "Retention Offer Flow"
Do NOT show a retention offer any other way, as Apple will reject it. This is the way I've done it for both of my apps and have never had an issue with Apple review with it.
The maths on this is insane. Every user you save from churning at $44.99/year is pure profit you would have otherwise lost.
STEP 4: MAKE YOUR ADS
This is where most people overcomplicate things. You don't need a big budget. You don't need UGC creators. You need one format that works.
The Before/After Format
The highest converting ad format my apps is dead simple: before and after.
Show someone BEFORE using the app. Show the result AFTER. That's the entire ad. Do NOT "show off your app". People don't care about your app. They care about the RESULT.
For face rating apps, show someone getting their score. For fitness apps, show the body scan. For food apps, show the calorie breakdown. The "reveal" IS the ad.
Making The Before/After Format
- Record yourself doing the "action"
- Generate a guys face "before" and "after" versions with z-image (https://fal.ai/models/fal-ai/z-image/base/lora/requests)
— "Use Z-Image Turbo (LoRa) to generate your before/after images"
- Use SwapTok to make both videos (before & after)
— "Use SwapTok to merge the AI guy onto your video"
- Use TikTok Studio (free) to create the ad - add your screenshots, and add trending music
— "Edit in CapCut / TikTok Studio App"
You can produce 10-12 variants in an hour this way. No creators. No contracts. No back and forth. Just you, your laptop, and an afternoon.
> DISCLAIMER: SwapTok is my product, I purpose-built SwapTok in order to make this process as easy as possible. You are more than welcome to use any other tool online.
Ad Rules
- Keep ads rough and native-looking. Trending sounds. Hook in the first 2 seconds. Show the viral feature. Trigger the insecurity.
- Your ad MUST look like a TikTok, not an ad. The moment someone thinks "this is an ad," you've lost them.
- Comment bait everything. TikTok's algorithm pushes videos with high engagement. Hide something in your ad that makes people comment (like men kissing). Comments = engagement = cheaper reach. It doesn't matter what they're commenting about.
- Check your comments and delete negative ones like "it costs money." These comments could potentially harm your ROI.
STEP 5: THE AD MACHINE
Start with a Smart+ campaign on TikTok. Optimise for subscribe/purchase events, NOT installs. $50/day starting budget. USA only.
Run 2-3 days before concluding results. You're buying data and investing in your winning ad.
— "TikTok Ads Dashboard"
You only need ONE winning creative. One. That's the whole game. Find it and throw money at it.
STEP 6: MANAGE YOUR ADS
After 2-3 days you'll know if you have a winner. Here are the only numbers that matter:
- CPI < $2.00
- CTR > 1.00%
- CPA < LTV
When you hit those: SCALE. Increase budget by +30% every 3 days maximum. Don't increase too quickly or the TikTok pixel will s**t itself.
Make variants of the winning ad (10-12 vids). Same hook, different person / "story."
If you don't hit those: kill the ad. Make a new creative. Test again. Don't touch campaign settings. The creative is almost always the problem.
With the pricing model I mentioned, your LTV will likely land around ~$30+ per paying user. If CPA is under that, you're printing.
A winning ad can carry your business for MONTHS. LAZYMAXXING to its core.
BONUS: CHEAT CODES (FREE MONEY)
Make sure you're not leaving money on the table:
- TikTok ad credit. TikTok matches your first $6,000 in ad spend. Auto-applies on new accounts. This can turn your $6k spend into $12k in distribution.
- Apple's Small Business Program. Cuts their fee from 30% to 15%. Free to apply.
- Cashflow planning. Apple payouts take 45 days. Plan accordingly. If you have $1,000, split it across 2 months. If you have nothing, prove profitability at $50/day then raise from friends and family (that's what I did).

The TikTok ad credit alone can refund your entire first month of spend. USE IT.
TLDR:
- Study what's working.
- Build an improved version.
- Add a viral feature that sells to a core desire.
- Price at $12.99/week and $59.99/year with a $44.99 retention offer.
- Make before/after ads with AI.
- Run a TikTok Smart+ campaign at $50/day.
- Find one winning ad.
- Scale the f**k out of it.
- Print cash in your sleep.
